What I’m Listening To
The Book
In just eight days, the 75th U.S. Women’s Open — and the last major golf event of the year (!!) — will be taking place at the Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas. Over the past couple of months, the USGA has been sharing highlights from the Open’s history, featuring incredible pictures and videos of some of the greatest legends of women’s professional golf — Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Louise Suggs, Mickey Wright, Betsy Rawls, JoAnne Carner, Carol Mann, Karrie Webb, Juli Inkster, Annika Sörenstam……just to name a few!
Below, I’ve shared a “collage” of some of my favorite photos that the USGA has featured. If you want to see more, the USGA has created a wonderful interactive timeline (available here), where visitors can access hundreds of photos and videos, dating all the way back to 1946.
As some of you may recall, Bessie won the USGA’s National Women’s Championship in 1903 — nearly half a century before the first Women’s Open or any conception of women’s professional golf had even come into existence. I cannot begin to imagine how proud she would be to see all of this.
From left to right, top to bottom: Louise Suggs (1949), Babe Didrickson Zaharias (1948), Betty Jameson (1947), Kathy Cornelius (1956), Mickey Wright (1959), Sandra Spuzich (1966), Suzie Maxwell Berning (1968), Donna Caponi (1970), Liselotte Neumann (1988), Betsy King (1990), Lauri Merten (1993), Juli Inkster (1999)
